Independent sources, vertical sites, media, communities, reviews, citations, and mentions can help create external confirmation of what the brand claims on its own domain. The objective, however, should not simply be to obtain more backlinks or to increase the number of mentions indiscriminately.

A relevant presence within sources closely tied to the sector can carry very different strategic meaning than numerous mentions from contexts with no relationship to the topic.
